The on-off-on again film, Black Mass is set to go ahead with Scott Cooper directing and Johnny Depp and Tom Hardy in starring roles.
Black Mass is a movie based upon the life of the infamous Whitey Bulger – the real-life gangster that Jack Nicholson’s character in The Departed was based upon, as well as the late Pete Postlethwaite’s in The Town.
Based upon the book Black Mass: The True Story Of An Unholy Alliance Between The FBI And The Irish Mob’ by Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill, the movie was originally going to star Johnny Depp and be directed by Barry Levinson, but both pulled out when the project was put on hold.
Depp has now returned and signed on to play Whitey Bulger with Out of the Furnace director Scott Cooper behind the camera.
Joel Edgerton was going to play the FBI agent that Whitey was an informant for, but he is no longer attached either. Instead, his Warrior co-star Tom Hardy is in advanced talks to take the role.
The life of Whitey Bulger is a very interesting one. From street level thug to become the FBI’s most wanted man; his story should be a great one to watch on screen.
