A cross between Dick Tracy and the Untouchables with an impressive cast including Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Sean Penn. This 1940’s gangster flick has plenty to shout about. Here is the review.
Gangster Squad is loosely based on a true story surrounding a war between the infamous crime boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) and a specially selected group of L.A.’s finest headed by Sergeant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin). There are plenty of good points in this action flick, with deliberate over-acting from the main characters that suits it perfectly. On the whole, it’s a night in well spent.
The main criticism about this, is one that took me by surprise, Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen was like a caricature who, despite his amazing talent as an actor, almost ruined most of the scenes he was in.
The rest of the cast make for a pleasurable viewing experience with Ryan Gosling, Giovanni Ribisi and Nick Nolte adding good performances. After this you can see why Brolin was in the running for Batman with the very believable hard-man that he portrays with effortless menace pouring out of him.
Gangster Squad is now available to purchase on Blu Ray and DVD.
