After twenty long years, Harry and Lloyd return for more antics of the dumb variety in Dumb and Dumber To. Check out what we thought of the comedy after the jump.
Dumb and Dumber is one of the funniest comedy movies of all-time. Yes we said it, and we suspect many others will nod in agreement. The pairing of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels was a genius move by Peter and Bob Farrelly back in 1994 and Dumb and Dumber remains their career highpoint ever since.
A sequel has been talked about ever since the credits rolled on the original and, although we had a crappy prequel with none of the original stars returning, it has taken two decades to finally see the most stupid characters submitted to celluloid return.
The film starts with Harry (Jeff Daniels) visiting Lloyd (Jim Carrey) in a care home. Apparently, Lloyd hasn’t uttered a word for twenty years after failing to snag Mary Swanson. Harry states that he can’t keep visiting every week due to him having medical problems and he needs a new liver. Lloyd then admits he is fine and that it was all a gag.
The odd couple then go looking for Harry’s long lost daughter in order to ask her to donate a kidney, which sets up a new cross country journey with more high jinks.
When Dumb and Dumber To is funny, it’s very funny. Smart yet humorous one-liners are in abundance, “It’s all water under the fridge” was a favourite. The one thing the sequel is lacking is its ability to remain funny throughout. The film tries too hard to compete with the original and to top that was a tall order to start with. Instead, the Farrellys add more crass sex jokes to try and raise a smile, yet fans know too well that what made Dumb and Dumber so funny was the lack there of.
Carrey and Daniels are both on top form again in their deliverance, but the script doesn’t quite work out great. Don’t get me wrong, we laughed out loud in parts, but many jokes failed to even raise a smirk.
Dumb and Dumber To will still make a tonne of money and be beloved by many, but for us, it was good but not good enough. Maybe our hopes were too high. If they do a threequel (which is possible) let’s hope the Farrellys pass the torch onto someone new who can take Lloyd and Harry on a new adventure with fresh jokes.
