The Davison family get together at a secluded house but find themselves under attack by a gang on masked men in the horror film You’re Next. Review after the jump.
Filmed in 2011, You’re Next was only released this year. Adam Wingard, who has directed segments of V/H/S, V/H/S 2 and The ABC’s of Death, also directs this horror thriller.
To celebrate their anniversary, Paul and Aubrey Davison invite their three sons, daughter and their partners to a secluded home for the weekend. A heated argument erupts around the table but things soon take a turn for the worse when the daughter’s boyfriend (Ti West in a cameo role) receives an arrow through the head thanks to an unseen attack.
The family are then hunted by a gang of men wearing animal masks, with each family member being bumped off in brutal ways. That is until they come face-to-face with Erin – Crispian Davison’s Australian girlfriend. Thanks to her time in “the outback”, Erin turns out to be a female version of Rambo and starts to hit the masked killers back.
While You’re Next isn’t terrible, it isn’t great either. It suffers from a lack of originality – we’ve been here before with Funny Games, The Strangers and most recently The Purge. All of those mentioned are better than You’re Next too.
One thing that You’re Next does have going for it, is a surprising twist. I really never saw it coming. Wingard does pump the gore up a lot with this, as we see knives going into eyes, heads in blenders and skulls being mashed by hammers. I feel that more suspense would have worked for the film better though, not seeing the killings on screen, but maybe that is just me.
Overall Thoughts:
Not a bad home invasion film, You’re Next suffers from a lack of originality and too much gore for its own good.
