It’s fair to say, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were huge in the 90’s – worldwide phenomenon. Looking to bring them back with a bang, director Jonathan Liebesman and producer Michael Bay update the characters for a new movie with a huge $125 million budget.

April O’Neill, played by Megan Fox, is an aspiring news reporter looking for her big break. She witnesses a heist by a notorious New York gang called the Foot Clan being stopped by, what she thinks, a single vigilante. She informs her editor but she is laughed out of the room, especially when she states that the vigilante is in fact four giant ninja turtles.

She soon comes to realise that she knew these four turtles – Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo – along with their rat father-figure Splinter, when she was just a little girl. They all uncover a conspiracy to kill millions of New Yorkers leaving bad guys Eric Sacks (William Fichtner) and Shredder to take over the city.teenage mutant ninja turtles poster

Reviews for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been pretty scathing by critics around the world, but we at Screen Critix believe that said reviews may be a little harsh. We actually quite enjoyed the film and found it humorous in parts – especially the one-liners of Michelangelo. Of course, the movie is never an Oscar-winner but it is what it is, a fun popcorn-muncher.

Much like the bad press The Lone Ranger received last year, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is worthy of a watch. Give it a viewing and make your own decision. We were pleasantly surprised.
