Steven Spielberg looking to make a movie based on Montezuma

It looks like legendary director Steven Spielberg has his next project in sight, as he is rumoured to be interested in making a movie based on Montezuma.

Initially reported by Deadline, Spielberg is said to be very interested in filming the story of Montezuma, with Javier Bardem wanting the role of Hector Cortez. Cortez was a Spanish explorer who battled the Aztec leader Montezuma during the Spanish invasion of Mexico, the result of which saw Montezuma lose his life. montezuma

Believe it or not, the film is actually based on a 50-year old script by Dalton Trumbo who wrote the film in 1965 with a plan on having Kirk Douglas as the star. The movie was never made though.

Trumbo’s draft will now be revised and rewritten by Steve Zaillian, who Speilberg worked with on his Oscar-winning epic Schindler’s List.

More on Montezuma when we have it.
