The first image from the upcoming female-led heist movie Ocean’s Eight has been released and Sandra Bullock and co look set to steal some money.
Keeping up with a recent trend of having an all-female cast (see Bridesmaids and the recent Ghostbusters reboot), Ocean’s Eight sees some of the world’s biggest actresses take over from the men in the successful and beloved Casino heist series.
As you can see from the still above, the movie stars such talent as Sandra Bullock (as Debbie Ocean), Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Olivia Munn, Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling and Dakota Fanning. That is some cast. If that wasn’t enough, Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Richard Armitage and James Corden also feature.
Ocean’s Eleven, which was released in 2001 and starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon made an incredible $450 million worldwide. The plot of that movie revolved around Danny Ocean (Clooney) building a team to pull of a massive heist on some of the most popular casinos in Las Vegas.
It was followed by Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen in 2004 and 2007 respectively, and even though they didn’t prove as popular as the first movie, they still helped the series go on to earn $1.1 billion worldwide.
Not much is known about Ocean’s Eight yet, but it is believed that a Danny Ocean’s sister Debbie, along with some friends, attempt to steal from the annual Met Gala in New York City. Gary Ross, who was the director on such hits as The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville and Free State of Jones, takes up the directing duties on Ocean’s Eight based on a script he wrote with Olivia Milch.
Matt Damon has confirmed that he will make a cameo in the movie when he spoke to Collider recently. “It’s just quick; a little cameo” before adding “I’m there for exposition”. It is thought that he will be returning as Linus Caldwell – a role he made famous in the 2001 Ocean’s Eleven.
Principal Photography on Ocean’s Eight began in New York on October 25th 216 and is said to have been completed just this week. Warner Bros have scheduled a release date for June 8th 2018, pitting it in the Summer blockbuster category. Having the film release under such a date, they must believe they have a hit on their hands. Other movies which have June 2018 release dates include Jurassic World 2, Barbie, The Incredibles 2, and a so far unnamed Marvel/Fox Superhero movie. That is some huge films to go up against.
For those who have been living under a rock and have never heard of the “Ocean’s” series, the 2001 movie was actually a remake of 1960 movie called Ocean’s 11 starring the Rat Pack – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and Peter Lawford. In that movie, Danny Ocean (Sinatra) gathers some old World War 2 buddies in order to steal from five Las Vegas casinos in one night.
