Sylvester Stallone is forced to try and break out of, what is thought to be, an unbreakable prison, with a little help from Arnold Schwarzenegger in Escape Plan. Review after the jump.
Yes, they may have both been in movies such as The Expendables 1 and 2, but in Escape Plan both Stallone and Schwarzenegger share some serious screen time.
Stallone stars as Ray Dreslin, a man who is paid some serious money by the FBI to breakout of heavily secured maximum prisons around the world. After another successful breakout, he is offered five million dollars to try and escape a new and secret prison, but something is not right from the start, as he witness a man being killed by guards in the transport to the prison.
The new prison is state of the art and looks to be escape proof, but Dreslin is a thinker and with the help of another inmate called Rottmeyer (Scwarzenegger), he is determined to, not only break out, but find out who wants him in there, as this prison is not for those who have been sent by the justice system , but paid for by people who want others to go missing.
Escape Plan is a good action film for those who want to switch off and enjoy two action legends together. For those who like to think, you will see massive plot holes. Like, why pay for someone to keep someone else alive in a prison? Why not kill them, so there is no chance of retaliation? Or, who paid for Rottmeyer to be locked up? That question especially once you have seen the ending.
Escape Plan can be intelligent though, in seeing how Dreslin comes up with his plans. Every little detail is vital to him, and it is interesting to see him at work.
The acting is okay; this is no academy award winning film though, it is what it is. Stallone, Schwarzenneger and Jim Cavaziel are all good, while supporting comes from the likes of Vinnie Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio, Sam Neill, 50 Cent and Amy Ryan.
Overall Thoughts:
Escape Plan is a decent no-brainer action film, but it can suffer from gaping plot holes. It’s great to see Stallone and Schwarzenegger still shooting up the place with the best of them.
