The Ultimates need to band together in an attempt to save the world from the devastating Galactus in Cataclysm: The Ultimates Last Stand 2. Review after the jump.
Continuing on from the last issue, Galactus has finally arrived on Earth and has already started to destroy New York and all of its inhabitants. Wanting to do something to help, Spider-Man swings onto the towering ‘Eater of Worlds’ without a plan and, just when it looks like Galactus is going to swat the webslinger like a fly, Thor comes to the rescue.
The Ultimates decide to leave the scene and regroup at the headquarters, where Tony Stark states that he has seen only one power similar to this before and that is when the Peter Parker from another dimension entered theirs.
Cataclysm: The Ultimates Last Stand 2 is drawn fantastically by Bagley and Hennessey, as they both show the threat that Galactus brings to the world with style. The problem, I feel, with the storyline is the usage of other dimensions once again. Age of Ultron was a let-down due to the overly used timeshift plot and now Cataclysm goes back to jumping dimensions to solve a problem.
Obviously there will be Marvel fans who don’t mind the concept of dimensions and time travel, yet this fan is frankly tired of it.
Cataclysm seems to be focussed on Miles’ Spider-Man as much as it is Galactus, which is great as he is a character that can carry a storyline such as this, but seeing as this is an Ultimates book, the usage of super heroes such as Thor, Captain America and Iron Man should be front and centre instead of them being background players.
Overall Thoughts:
Cataclysm: The Ultimates Last Stand 2 is a good book but nothing ground-breaking. It’s well drawn and looks great, yet the jumping dimensions plot has been overly used in past arcs.
