A six-episode web series based around the awkward life of teenage girl Olivia, we take a look at Olivia D’Lima’s Naughties.
When thinking back about the relatively short time you have spent on this Earth, your memories are most likely filled with little, embarrassing, and cringe-worthy moments. We’ve all found ourselves in strange predicaments, and done things we would go on to regret. That’s life, as ole Frank Sinatra once sang. Now, with thanks to Olivia D’Lima, we can relate to a teenage girl and the often crazy, sometimes mundane moments through her life, in the short web series Naughties.
Set during the mid-2000s, Olivia (played by creator Olivia D’Lima) is a normal British teenage girl. She spends time chatting to boys via instant messenger, sings into her phone and plays it back to herself, records voice mail welcoming messages aided by the radio playing a recent hit song in the background, and parties with “so-called” friends, though she sometimes finds herself on the receiving end of a prank or joke.
Each episode is (very) short and sweet, coming in at just under, or just over, three minutes in length, and it’s fair to say that they are utterly enjoyable. D’Lima, who has found success on television in such shows as Casualty, Death in Paradise, and The Killing Kind is an extremely likable actor who oozes both charm and young innocence, that you can’t help wanting to see more of her and more snapshots into the life of her character. This is a series that could very well be extended into longer episodes and find an audience on television or on a streaming service such as Netflix. It’s well made and well performed by the two actors we see on screen, both Olivia and Georgie (Nalan Burgess) – we don’t actually see the mother, only hear her from off-screen.
The series is available to watch on YouTube now. Click this link to see for yourselves – Naughties.
If you want a small comedy series to binge (it will take less than 15 minutes to watch it all) the Naughties comes highly recommended. We just hope that a second series is on the way, or even better, it is picked up for a bigger platform and a budget. This potentially could be the new Fleabag or Peep Show.
