It looks like the remake of Spawn is one step closer to reality, as creator Todd McFarlane has spoken about self-financing the movie, as well as writing, producing and directing.
A hit comic book series, Spawn was first adapted for the big screen in 1997 with Michael Jai White portraying the titular antihero, as he battled against John Leguizamo’s Clown and Martin Sheen’s Jason Wynn. The film gained decent reviews and £87 million in box office receipts. Not bad for a movie made for £40 million.
Todd McFarlane has been talking about the possibility of a reboot for a while now, but he is looking to get the ball rolling soon, as he told Game Rant
“My goal to some degree is to self-finance and I know [people] go, ‘that’s dumb and that’s crazy,’ but years ago, Mel Gibson did it with ‘The Passion of The Christ.’ So I sort of call this one, Spawn from hell: my passion of the anti-Christ. In my mind I can do this thing with 10 million bucks and if you keep it small they’re just gonna get an unknown director anyway for that kind of a budget, so I go, ‘If you’re going to get an unknown director, let me be that unknown director.’ Again, there’s nobody that’s argued it – they just go, ‘Then where’s the screenplay? Get it done.’”
Michael Jai White has already stated that he would like to revisit the character again, which is good news for many should McFarlane take him up on the offer, because White did a great job first time around.
Another actor to throw his name in the hat is academy award winner Jamie Foxx, who has expressed his interest in, not only playing Spawn, but helping the movie to get going.
Whoever McFarlane decides to cast, what we do know is that he is looking to make the movie more of a horror instead of the original’s superhero orientation.
