Recently unemployed, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson try to keep up with the world and start afresh at Google in The Internship. Review after the jump.
When their jobs as salesmen ends, both Billy (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) are obviously down in the dumps. With no actual skills to offer potential employers, the future doesn’t look great for the two forty-somethings, that is until Billy comes across an advert for an internship at the headquarters for the Internet giants – Google.
Once at the internship, the guys find out that many other people will be trying out for the job and that the competition is strong and ruthless.
The film itself is a mixed-bag. There are a few laughs, especially from the nerd and 80’s references, and also from the two main characters trying hard to fit in. The premise can actually ring true too, with many people trying to keep up with the ever-changing world. These days, it is the nerds and geeks who rule – they are the most successful. The movie itself can also be heartfelt, with Billy and Nick both being very likable.
There are also factors that stop this buddy comedy from being a four-star rated movie. One being that it is not very original; we know what to expect having seen the premise a million times before. It is similar to Billy Madison – someone trying to keep up with much younger people and hoping to get past the evil character that will go out of their way to jeopardise the lead’s plan. In The Internship, it is Graham Hawtrey (played by Max Minghella) and he is irritating beyond belief.
The movie also sees Wilson, Vaughn and the rest of their young team take an outing to a strip club. I don’t understand why this was necessary or what it did for the story. It’s as if the director and writers (Vaughn being one of them) just wanted to show some boobs in the film, even though it looked out of place.
The Internship is worth a one-time watch, if only for the fact to see how good a place Google looks to work at.
