A young boy in old-style clothes plays a game of chase in the woods and soon finds himself running from a horseman. As the horseman gathers pace, the boy runs into a road and narrowly misses a car. We are soon informed that the boy – who the police have named John Doe – is in hospital with a mysterious sickness. sleepy hollow episode 5

Crane and Mills visit the hospital and come to the realisation that the boy is speaking the language of Middle English (not to be mistaken with Middle Earth from The Lord of the Rings) – an old language used by people over 400 years ago. Luckily Crane also speaks Middle English and finds out that the boy comes from a village many years ago.

Mills and Ichabod then travel to the woods and come across a place where the two time zones meet and into a village from the past. They see that the other inhabitants have the mysterious sickness and that they need to get the boy back to the village before he and Ichabod (who also picks up the disease) dies.

Whilst it was still a good episode, John Doe was probably the least enjoyable of the series to date. Some may get lost with the “They were all dead in the first place” explanation as it seemed hastily put together.

One good thing is the introduction of Pestilence (one of the Four Horsemen) and the return of Death at the very end. Let’s hope Episode 6 is a return to form.
