Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Dame Helen Mirren are back for more action and espionage in the film Red 2. Check out our review straight after the jump.
Trying to lead a normal life with his girlfriend Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), Frank Moses (Willis) is dragged back into action when his conspiracy nut of a friend Marvin (Makovich) shows up to tell him that they are all in danger. Sarah, who is bored of how the relationship is going, seems more than happy for a little action, even if it means her life is at risk.
The gang soon bump into Moses’ old flame Katja (Catherine Zeta Jones) – a Russian spy with hidden agendas, and Han (Byung-Hun Lee) – the world’s greatest assassin who is looking to kill Moses for both money and pleasure.
The plot takes our heroes across the glove as they look to find a weapon of mass destruction, while avoiding those that look to kill them.
A surprise came in the form of the inventor of said weapon – Dr Bailey, played brilliant by Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Red 2 mixes action set-pieces with great comedy moments brilliantly. One minute we are listening to Dame Helen Mirren shout “bollocks” in a surreal moment and then cut to a slow motion action scene where a sports car is jammed into a handbrake turn whilst she is firing guns out of the two front windows simultaneously, all the while Linkin Park is blasting out a song. Fantastic.
There is little wonder why Bruce Willis, during an interview on British television, stated that he was more excited about the release of Red 2 while he was supposed to be promoting A Good Day To Die Hard. Red and Red 2 is what The Expendables should have been like – an action movie with heart, laughs and great acting. It was also great to see two Hannibal Lectors in one scene as Brian Cox shares some screen time with Hopkins.
Overall Thoughts:
If you liked Red, you will love Red 2. The main cast all do a fantastic job and you will be in awe of the action one minute and laughing at the jokes the next. Let’s hope there is one more to make a trilogy.
