Andrew Garfield has recently suggested that Miles Morales could take over the Spider-Man suit from Peter Parker in future movies, yet producer Avi Arad has shot the suggestion down.
If you are a reader of Marvel comics, you will be aware of Miles Morales. He is an Hispanic teenager who took over the role of Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe following the death of Peter Parker. With Andrew Garfield already stating the he may not continue the role past The Amazing Spider-Man 3, he has already suggested that Miles Morales could be introduced or Ben Reilly ( a clone from the comics), yet producer Avi Arad says no.
Talking to The Playlist, Arad had the following to say.
“The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today’s world in many ways.
“But to have multiple ones… I don’t know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.”
Interestingly, Marvel announced a huge event for comics last month. Later this year will see a comic arrive that will feature every Spider-Man incarnation ever in one story. It’s obvious that Marvel have more faith in the characters they have created than the producer of the Spider-Man movies.
So it boils down to the fact that, should Garfield leave the character after The Amazing Spider-Man 3, we could have a replacement for him (another actor playing Peter Parker), the death of the character and focus on the villains, or yet another reboot.
Maybe having Miles Morales isn’t such a bad idea after all.
