One Piece Uncut Part 4 review from Screen Critix. We take a look at the latest uncut adventures (in the UK) of the Straw Hat pirates!
You will have to bear with me on this one, bit of an origin story incoming:
Back in the day it was all about Dragonball Z, as I mentioned in my Kuroko’s Basketball season 1 review, and I never got to watch One Piece. I believe the English version came out in 2004. For many years I’ve wanted to try and watch One Piece but when you see that the show has 600+ episodes it can be a bit intimidating! Now, combined with reading the Manga, I am finally getting the chance to watch the show.
On with the review, firstly it should be noted that One Piece is now technically an old Anime. Especially when you consider that the first episodes came out in 1999. This doesn’t stop the show from impressing on a visual level, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the show has held up over the years. The fight scenes are of a good quality, the storytelling can actually be quite emotional, and hey, who doesn’t like pirates?
The answer to that question is most of the One Piece world. Monkey D. Luffy and his band of pirates are constantly hunted down by bounty hunters looking to earn a reward from their demise or capture. This makes for interesting viewing, and amusing situations.
Without spoiling the show, the Tony Tony Chopper storyline was the highlight of the entire DVD set. I found myself really rooting for the character. His back story is genuinely touching, heartfelt is the word, to the point inspirational could be the tag line. I also love the re-occurring theme of Animals in One Piece. One moment, minor spoiler, where Luffy starts teaching martial arts to a bunch of ‘nails hard’ turtles was absolutely priceless.
Overall thoughts:
One Piece stands the test of time, it’s still running after all, and is an interesting story. The show features heartfelt moments, good fight scenes and a whole lot of comedy. My only criticism would be that the pacing can sometimes be awkward; the time spent towards the end of the DVD set in the desert did drag quite a bit until the real storyline moments began to shine.
