Looking into the villains of the DC universe – what makes them tick and why they are as important of as the super heroes – we have reviewed Necessary Evil: Super Villains of DC Comics.
Fans of comics are drawn to the stories due to, not only the super heroes, but because of the struggle each goes through on a daily basis. The struggle always comes down to the villains. The DC rogue gallery is arguably the greatest in the comic world, and this documentary looks into them in-depth.
Without the villain there would be no super heroes, and visa versa.
We all know the origin stories for the likes of Batman and Superman, this film also looks at why the villains are out to hurt the innocents, why do they need power above all around them. Some of the people who created the characters tell us why their creations are like what they are; eg Clayface 3, Darkseid and Deathstroke.
Necessary Evil: Super Villains of DC Comics, narrated by Christopher Lee, features many contributors to the DC world telling us about their favourite bad guys and favourite story arcs. Other interviewees include Zach Snyder (director of Man of Steel), CM Punk (WWE Wrestler), Michael Shannon (Zod in Man of Steel) and Guillermo Del Toro (director of HellBoy).
We move between each character quite quickly, never stopping on one for long. We talk about Joker and his effect on the world, but soon move to The Riddler, Darkseid onto Doomsday and then onto Sinestro. While information is offered thick, we still urge for more. The likes of Bane and how he broke Batman’s back in the Knightfall arc, gets less than a minute in time, although it is arguably one of the most important moments in DC comics in the last 40 years
Overall Thoughts:
Necessary Evil: Super Villains of DC Comics is a necessary purchase for die-hard comic fans or those wanting to get to know more about the characters. Without the villain there would be no super heroes, and visa versa.
