Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D Episode 1 Review

September 25, 2013 By Edmond Guy Leave a Comment

Today on Screen Critix we are reviewing the much anticipated Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D episode 1. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype or is just another series lost in the yearly rotation of shows.

Spoilers ahead.

This could possibly be “The Breaking Bad Effect”* but the opening episode of SHIELD didn’t impress me much. I knew the Avengers wouldn’t show up …. though it probably would’ve been a great start if they could of pulled that off; but I expected more from the show. The endless repetition of one liners got old fast.

*Breaking Bad is so damn good everything else doesn’t shine as brightly.

Agents of ShieldThe big #facepalm of the episode was the resurrection of Agent Coulson. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is already predictable enough without characters that have died getting brought back. They are saving the mystery of his “death” but honestly it just isn’t interesting. I think they have ruined one of the big moments of The Avengers as a result.

What will likely save the day for most Marvel fans is the continuous nods to previous material. From “Extremis” technology been used as the first “plot of the week” to regular mentions of The Avengers.

I am not totally down on the series. I always give shows a three episode chance if they show some signs of hope. But for me to continue after episode three I would have to see significant improvements.

Personally, an Avenger in the first episode would’ve likely worked better. The rumored $12 million spent on the pilot was not worth the end product …. even though 11.9 million people tuned in to the pilot apparently.
