Fans of the Fifty Shades of Grey book have started to lobby for the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele to be recast after it was announced that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson would be portraying the roles in the movie adaption earlier this week.
A petition has been formed and, in just two days, it has accumulated over twenty thousand signatures. A spokesperson for the petition believes, should they have enough signatures, studio bosses will have listen and demand the change.
Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam was given the chance to play the much beloved Christian Grey this week and Dakota Johnson was handed the role of Anastasia Steele but, much like the announcement of Ben Affleck for the Batman vs. Superman movie, it was met with concern from die-hard fans.
Some have fans have even gone on to demand the exact replacements – with Matt Bomer (Magic Mike) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls, Sin City) being the overall favourites.
Producer Dana Brunetti has taken to Twitter to address fans’ concerns, stating
“There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with the other actor etc.
“So if your favourite wasn’t cast, then it’s most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.”
So it looks like the petition will be to no avail. Fifty Shades of Grey is set for a worldwide release on August 1st 2014.
