Elysium (2013) review

Elysium review by Screen Critix. This one is going to be tricky to review.

I am sitting here wondering if Elysium was good or if just average.

Elysium PosterThe story takes place on Earth, which is poverty stricken, and a place called Elysium. Which is where the rich people live and is highly appealing to citizens of Earth. The main character, portrayed by Matt Damon, is an Earthing named Max. After a series of unfortunate events he finds himself needing to get to Elysium. His only option is to take a risky job in exchange for a one way ticket to the sought after destination.

In general I thought the pacing of the film wasn’t very good, It took far too long to get going, and I found myself bored at times. Maybe the fact that District 9 was so good made my expectations a bit too high? The second half of the film fixed this. Before you know it the action and the story click and the film becomes more enjoyable.

Matt Damon wasn’t too bad, shiny head and all, but didn’t really shine too brightly. His character design didn’t seem to great. Poor choices like the robosuit design made him look goofy at times. For me the highlight of the film was how good Sharlto Copley was. He had a unique presence for a bad guy, he was intimidating and made you feel like he was dangerous whenever he was on the screen. On another note, Jodie Foster didn’t impress me this time round. Her performance seemed awkward.

Overall:

The film wasn’t as good as I expected, but, it was not a bad film.
