Pacific Rim (2013) review

October 3, 2013 By Edmond Guy Leave a Comment

Today on Screen Critix I will be posting my Pacific Rim review. Or as I like to call it “Why Transformers is sh*t”. I’m in trouble for that aren’t I?

As this is my first movie review I am going to take a bit of a different approach. The review will be structured in three parts. Spoilers ahead.

Pacific Rim Poster

Part 1: Storyline and characters.

“It’s not obedience Mr.Becket. It’s respect.”

Becket And Mori.

The characters in my opinion were good. I especially enjoyed the Becket/Mori storyline. From their early rivalry, to the hints of romance, all the way to the epic finale of them working together and using a ship as a samurai sword. DAMN, that was epic. I also think the relationship between Stacker Pentecost and Mako Mori worked well. You could sense the father/daughter connection between the two by the end of the film.

Will take this opportunity to say that Idris Elba is just awesome. His character in Pacific Rim had a strong presence and it was a joy to watch his performance. Might be time to break out The Wire?

Part 2: Location, look and feel of the film.

Hong Kong

The mixture of cultures was refreshing. From all the martial arts nods (HELLO omoplata), characters from all over the globe to a good portion of the film featuring in Hong Kong.

The colours used in the film were lovely(used the word lovely). The battle in Hong Kong felt like something out of an Anime; looking at you Gundam!

The entire feel of the film felt like a tribute to Asia. It comes as no surprise Hideo Kojima stated “never imagined [he] would be fortunate enough to see a film like this in [his] life”. This was kinda Godzillas versus Gundams I guess! I LOVE Gundam. Godzilla remake by the dude who made Monsters will also be welcomed with open arms.

Part 3: Overall opinion.

As an Anime fan, martial arts geek and fan of big fight films; this was an amazing experience. Honestly, what Michael Bay puts out via the Transformers is nothing in comparison. Pacific Rim has character, an interesting plot and some of the coolest battle sequences I’ve seen.

The sad thing is people will still go watch the next Transformers and it will earn more money. But, money isn’t everything. Guillermo del Toro should be proud of an amazing achievement.

…. Sequel? TAKE MY MONEY!

Is Levitra really cheap

4.5 / 5 stars
