Frances is a twenty-something girl living in New York trying to find her way in life in her own quirky way. Check out the Frances Ha review after the jump.
It seems artsy and humorous films a coming back in fashion, that’s if Frances Ha is anything to go by. Director Noah Baumbach, who directed The Squid and the Whale as well as Greenberg, brings us the story of the friendship and romance – or lack of it – for a twenty seven year old woman in New York.
Frances breaks up with her boyfriend just after he asks her to move in with him. She declines, because she enjoys staying with her best friend Sophie. The only problem there is that Sophie has decided to move in with her own boyfriend Patch, leaving Frances without a place to live.
Not only does Frances find herself jumping from apartment to apartment in an attempt to substitute the life she had with Sophie, she is also left without a job where she was an understudy for a dance group, but never quite good enough to make it as a professional dancer.
Filmed completely in Black and White, Frances Ha will make you laugh in parts, especially at the oddness of the main character. Frances is quirky, ditzy and childlike – especially in comparison to the other characters she meets throughout the course of the movie.
Greta Gerwig, who plays the titular Frances, has just been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, and it’s easy to see why. She carries the whole film on her shoulders like a seasoned professional. If this performance is anything to go by, she should have a long and successful career.
Overall Thoughts:
A humorous and artsy film, Frances Ha will make you laugh and dance along to its great soundtrack. Greta Gerwig does an excellent job as Frances – the twenty something woman child.
