Yes, you read the title of the article correctly; a movie is being made based on the 1980’s classic Gameboy video game Tetris.
We all remember Tetris, right? The blocks coming down from the sky, and you have to move them to make lines? The annoying and catchy music? Well, it looks like the game will be turned into a movie. Of course, the producers will have to change the plot somewhat. I mean, who wants to stare at blocks for two hours in a cinema.
According to reports, the Tetris movie will be a big, sci-fi movie and will be handled by Threshold Entertainment, who have already dabbled in video game adaptions in the past – Mortal Kombat and its terrible sequel.
“It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie,” Threshold’s CEO Larry Kasanoff said. “This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes. Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind Tetris which makes it a much more imaginative thing.
“What you [will] see in Tetris is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance.”
To be totally fair, we haven’t really had a great movie based on a video game yet. The Resident Evil series has failed to capture the eeriness of the games, Silent Hill and its sequel weren’t great and don’t even get me started on Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter the Movie.
More on Tetris when we have it.
