She’s Not Your Type (2018) short film review

A double date goes wrong in every way possible in Matthew C. Vella’s comedy short film She’s Not Your Type. Check out our thoughts.

As has been stated numerous times in the past, comedy is the hardest genre to get right in film. We have heard numerous times from aspiring filmmakers that their latest independent comedy is “laugh-out-loud funny” and, even though most are humorous enough to make us raise a smile, most don’t make us chuckle. As we said, comedy is hard. We are pleased to report that She’s Not Your Type, whilst rough around the edges, did make us laugh.

The short starts in a diner where Barry (played by Shane Millward) is sat with his two friends Sarah (Zoe Panaretos) and Anthony (Efkan Cetin), whilst he waits patiently for his new girlfriend Alex (Adrianne Armida) to arrive. She is over forty-five minutes late, and Barry’s friends are not impressed. When she finally does show up, the tattooed and leather-clad Alex instantly causes a scene by putting a burning cigarette out on a waiter’s chest and goes into detail regarding her lateness – she apparently had trouble with a guy she was hunting in the woods and there was blood. Lots of blood.

The rest of the date continues in this manner – Alex saying or doing inappropriate things (like bringing a live grenade on her date) and scaring Barry’s friends (along with the rest of the diners).

As aforementioned above, She’s Not Your Type is rather rough around the edges, especially when it comes to framing and some parts of the sound design, but it more than makes up for it with the over-the-top performances and a script with sharp and comedic dialogue. The jokes about being in an “open relationship” really did have me laughing out loud.

Whilst it was created in 2018, She’s Not Your Type is finally being released soon on YouTube for the general public after a lengthy festival run where it picked up numerous awards. If you are in need of a good laugh and have ten minutes to spare, then we highly recommend giving this short rib-tickler a watch.
