A Marvel movie about a bunch of intergalactic a-holes? Yes it is and it’s brilliant. Check out our review of Guardians of the Galaxy right here on Screen Critix.
It’s been a good year for Marvel films. Firstly we had Captain America: The Winter Soldier in May and now we have the action-packed Guardians of the Galaxy to finish up before next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Some say it was a risky move for Marvel – putting out a new summer film with characters that are, shall we say, not as well- known as some of their other commodities like Iron Man, Thor and Hulk. But the risk paid off, as we now have a new set of heroes to rally behind and root for.
The film starts in 1988 and a young Peter Quill witness his mother dying in a hospital due to cancer. Teary-eyed, he runs away from her bed and is instantly picked up by a UFO. We then move onto the present, and a grown-up Peter is now a ravage in space, going by the name Starlord. He is sent to find a mystery sphere, but once he has collected it, he finds himself on the run from many others, all looking for the same loot. Some of those include Gamora (sent by Ronan the Accuser), Rocket and Groot. Though they all fight each other at first, they, along with Drax (WWE’s Batista) become the Guardians of the Galaxy.
First they need to stop Ronan and the person he is working for – Thanos. Yes, we get to see Thanos (Josh Brolin) in a couple of scenes for the first time since the end credits of Avengers Assemble.
Guardians pumps up the action in many scenes, with fights on the ground and epic spaceship battles. What it also does well is by adding humour into the mix too. Every character has their own distinct humour and laugh-out-loud scenes. Peter is sarcastic, Rocket is an angry, Groot can only say his name, Drax does understand irony and more. Also, which was surprising, Guardians can also be heartfelt and emotional, especially when it comes to Peter, his mother and the last present she gave him.
Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is not only one of Marvel’s very best films to date, it’s also one of the best films of the year.
