Empire State (2013) – review

Care & share:

Liam Hemsworth and Dwayne Johnson star in the 80’s set heist movie Empire State. Read the review here.

After failing to make it into the New York Police Department, Chris Potamitis (Liam Hemsworth – The Hunger Games) takes a job as a security guard, which consists of picking up money from stores and taking into to a not-very-secure lock-up. Whilst on the job, Chris and his partner Tony get hijacked and Tony loses his life.

Chris is then moved onto a night shift at the lock-up and, after seeing how lacklustre the security is, he decides to steal himself $20 thousand. Chris then tells his best friend Eddie, who is quite possibly the most annoying character you will ever come across, and Eddie blabs his mouth to a couple of small-time gangsters, who in turn decide to steal all the money from the lock-up for themselves.

Dwayne Johnson plays a detective on the trail and hunt for the criminals, keeping a close eye on Chris and his friends.

Whilst not terrible, Empire State doesn’t make for a very memorable film. Although it is based on a true story, the heist itself is terrible. Chris Hemsworth does a great job, as does Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, although the latter is hardly in the film. The fact that both he and Emma Roberts receive top billing on the poster, is somewhat false advertising.

Empire State is worth a one-time watch, but if you are after a crime heist, there are plenty of better offerings out there.
